Hot spots on your horse

Hot spots, also known as acute moist dermatitis, are a common skin condition in horses that can cause significant discomfort and irritation. These inflamed areas of skin can develop suddenly and are often caused by prolonged exposure to moisture, such as sweat trapped under tack or blankets, or from wet bedding. Friction from ill-fitting tack or consistent rubbing can exacerbate the problem. Allergies to environmental factors like pollen, dust, or certain types of bedding can also lead to hot spots.

Treating hot spots involves several steps. First, it's essential to clean the affected area gently with a mild antiseptic solution to remove any dirt and bacteria. Clipping the hair around the hot spot can help keep the area dry and allow for better air circulation. Applying a topical antibiotic or anti-inflammatory cream can reduce inflammation and prevent infection. It's also crucial to identify and address any underlying causes, such as improving grooming practices, ensuring proper fit of tack, and minimizing exposure to allergens. Regular monitoring and prompt treatment can help keep your horse comfortable and healthy.
